Guiding can be a rewarding career. You get to spend more time on the water and lay your hands on more fish than you can imagine! Not to mention creating memorable experiences for avid anglers and those new to the sport. You also have the privilege of sharing your knowledge and passion and meeting many great people. Yet guiding isn’t for everyone, and it comes with a unique set of criteria, as long-time professional guide Toby Kvalevog shares in this video. Below he shares his 5 best tips for being a successful guide.
Be Social:
You have to be able to have conversations with people. Even if the fishing is slow, a memorable experience can be made just by having a good day on the water in good company. Kvalevog goes on to mention that you have to be humble and honest and don’t BS people with high expectations. Have a few laughs, be courteous, and cater to all ages and experience levels.
Be an Educator:
When you’re on the water, teach people what you’ve learned and pass it on to them so they can better enjoy their fishing experiences.
Have Good Equipment:
Ensure your hooks are sharp, your rods, reels, and line are all in working order, and your boat is safe and well-maintained.
Be Professional:
Remember, you’re running a busy business, and you want people to return year after year to grow your client base. That means answering the phone, being respectful, and answering questions while being a good listener.
Follow Through:
When the day is over, post pictures of your day. Send the pictures to your clients and share them to thank them for choosing you as their guide. You want to make a lasting impression that keeps people returning to you for your trusted service.
