Devils Lake is a large body of water and perch can be found in just about every part of the lake. Jason Mitchell breaks down exactly how to zero-in on jumbo perch locations when ice fishing in this response to the VA member content request below:

TOPIC: How to find Devils Lake perch with no livescope
DETAILS: I’ve struggled finding Devils Lake perch. I’ve heard you pretty much just keep drilling and moving around but, I haven’t gotten on a decent perch bite in a long time. It would give me some confidence to see how a professional finds perch.

On Devils Lake, perch will cycle through all the different bays and parts of the lake. For whatever reason, however, some locations will fish better from one winter or even one part of the season to the next. Begin your search by checking with local bait shops, social media, or online forums to get a general picture or proximity of where most anglers are catching perch be it locations such as the main lake, Creole Bay, Six Mile Bay, Black Tiger Bay, etc. The Devils Lake Tourism website is a great resource you can utilize to find some of the latest reports, a list of local bait shops, guide services, regulations, and more.

Devils Lake is not for the faint of heart, especially when you’re targeting perch through the ice. You can have some really tough days covering a lot of area, drilling a ton of holes, and just miss the fish entirely. The next day, you might hear about a bite that popped up 5 miles away on a different bay and it was lights out. You need to go with the mentality to persevere and keep grinding away. Sooner or later you will get lucky and a good day jumbo perch fishing on Devils Lake is about as good as it gets. Perch numbers are definitely up right now, so don’t be intimidated by the vastness of the lake – it’s a good time to get out.

  1. Thanks for the information! My first five or so times out I was having a hard time even marking fish and if I did they were small or wouldn’t bite. This last time I went out I was finally rewarded, I drilled all of three holes and had a limit of jumbo perch in an hour. It was awesome. Devils lake can definitely wear a guy down.
