Very few applications call for tying a straight braid to your presentation. Most of the time, when using braid as your main line, a fluorocarbon or monofilament leader can up the odds of catching fish in several ways: invisibility, forgiveness in the stretch, and abrasion resistance from rock, wood, and sharp teeth.
There are many line-to-line knots to learn, but a favorite among fishing professionals is the Alberto knot for its speed, strength, and slim profile. In this video, Virtual Angling staff member McKeon Roberts demonstrates how to tie the Alberto knot, a must-know for any angler.
To tie the knot, first, create a loop with the leader line end (mono or fluoro). Then, push the braided main line through the loop. Pinch the leader line main, tag end, and braid together while keeping the loop exposed. Next, simultaneously wrap the braid over the leader tag and main lines. Work your way down, wrapping 5-10 times. More wraps for lighter lines are best. Now, wrap back UP the same wraps you made with the braid over the leader tag and mainline another 5-10 times. With the braided tag end facing towards the loop, run the tag end through the loop and begin to tighten the not by pulling all the tag and main lines in opposite directions. Once the knot has started, take a second to lubricate the knot with saliva to ensure a smooth sinch. Now, pull on the leader lines tightly to secure the knot. Trim the tag ends, and you’re ready to tie up and fish!
