Leech Lake 5/17/23
The 2023 Minnesota fishing open is now in the rear view. We were met with tougher fishing conditions than some openers, but if you stayed after it there were fish to be caught.
The fish seem to be very spread out right now, so covering water is key. Drifting along wind blow shorelines or moving around with your trolling motor at 0.5-0.9 mph with a long shank shiner jig such as Kenkatch Tackle Company’s Red Long Shank tipped with a spot tail shiner is sure to put a few fish in the boat. Areas with scattered boulders in 6’-11’ of water seem to be holding a slightly higher concentration of walleyes right now. On days when the wind blows it has been concentrating fish tighter to the wind blown rocky shorelines.
With the warming water temperature and consistent weather, fishing should only get better in the coming week or two. The area around Goose Island, Stony Point, and Pine Point are worth checking.
