Limits of walleye are being brought in daily. Happy anglers are finding fish in just about any spot while using a few different methods and techniques.
Jigging a brightly colored jig in 8 – 18 feet of water over rock and sandy structure is producing nice fish. The hottest color this past week has been bright gold with a red dot and tipped with a frozen shiner to be exact.
The sandy bottom areas in shallower water have also been a target for trolling this past week. Crawfish colors have turned on; however silver/blue has been hot. Of course gold, purple and red have been in the mix. 2.5mph long lining a shallow diver will help you cover ground to find the pockets of fish. Also, a nice mixed bag as walleye, sauger, smallmouth, pike and perch will all hit in those areas.
Others are heading out deeper over mud. Plan on drifting over 29 – 30 feet. Rigg up a spinner with a big fat juicy night crawler or leach. My personal blade choice is white and silver or just plain gold. If you make your own spinners do what I do – I use a series of clear beads, then a larger red bead then a series of clear beads. Make sure that the blades spin past the red bead. What this will do is create a flash effect. Pitch that sucker sideways to the drift so that when the line catches up it will pull the spinner rig with a “swing” action into the drift. I call this “catching ‘em on the swing”. That action almost always will entice a bite.
Moving into 4 Mile Bay and the Rainy River, a mixed creel of walleye, sauger, smallmouth, northern pike and the occasional crappie or perch is all the talk. River is still running fast with high water so target the backwater breaks and seams. This is where most fish will pool. We see many anglers jigging the river with a lot of success. River colors have been gold, black and white. I tend to go into search and catch mode and toss #5 or #6 white Mr. Twister tails walking them back to the boat from structure or shoreline.
