Chamberlain SD is known as a fish factory so we went down to check things out as the ice is finally melting from an usual long winter.
Several walleye/sauger were caught using two techniques. We spent time trolling near the face of the dam and pitched jigs along the rocks near the bridges. The areas between the bridges is town has warmer water which makes this a great place for fish to stage. Recent run offs have areas of the river stained up and dirty so looking for cleaner warmer water was key to finding active fish.
Using electronics made it easy to locate the fish but the bite was finicky. Trolling shad style Crankbaits worked well but increasing our trolling speed to over 2.5 mph seemed to get the active fish to bite. PK Ridgeline Crankbait in Fire-tiger colors worked best while white/purple colors also produced numbers of fish.
Spot locking near the face of the dam jigging produced a good jigging bite where the PK Spin A Jig tipped with minnow and stinger hook caught several fish.
