In this tip, Nicole King shares with us her Wisconsin trout fishing tips and setup. Wisconsin has an early catch-and-release only season for trout that runs from the beginning of January to the beginning of May.  This is truly the perfect time to target them, especially if you’re new to trout fishing. When starting out, some of the best places to target are in the deeper holes and deeper runs.

Nicole King takes advantage of Wisconsin’s catch-and-release trout season.

As for gear, she uses a 6’2″ light action rod with a fast tip. Her favorite lures include the 1/8th oz Acme Tackle Kastmaster spoon and the 1/8th oz jig head by Eurotackle tipped with a soft plastic or Gulp! minnow. Gold and silver are her go-to colors.

. For jig heads and plastics, she prefers black, white, or chartreuse. These choices are based heavily on the color of the plastic. If the water is dark and dirty, she chooses brighter plastics and if the water is clearer, she goes with a more natural color.

The Acme Kastmaster is also a favorite, due to its erratic action in the water.

As for technique, she focuses on a few favorites. First, she likes to do light rod tip twitches while reeling slowly in current. This allows the lure to flutter in one spot. She also like to do a straight retrieve retrieve with spoons, allowing rocking action back and forth. When it comes to using a jig with a soft plastic, she will simply straight retrieve this presentation and slow it way down allowing it to sink into deeper holes.
