Twin Cities metro guide Adam Griffith covers another great location for targeting midwinter panfish.
To target panfish in weeds, Griffith likes to look for a large, flat area that is adjacent to deep water. The idea being that in the daytime these fish pull up into the first weeds on that flat just adjacent to the deeper water and then, at night, they’ll swim out into the basin.

After dark, you’ll notice a lot of basin fish are 10 feet off the bottom and you can retrace that backwards to find the cover they use during the day.
So, when you’re looking for crappies during the day, find a flat adjacent to deep water and work that first edge until you find the last standing weeds of the year and usually you will find fish set up somewhere along that weed edge.
