So, you’re ready to take on the challenge of musky fishing? As with any new endeavor, having the right setup is crucial. Lake Vermillion is a well-known trophy musky fishery in northern Minnesota where we met with Everett Bay Lodge’s recommended guide, Dave Schueck to break down the basics:
Rod and Reel
- Rod: A heavy-action, 9-foot rod is a great starting point. This length offers good power and distance, while the heavy action provides flexibility for various baits. You can use a 10-foot but most are difficult to fit comfortably in the average boat rod locker. An 8′ to 8.5′ can also work well if they are more comfortable for you to handle, but keep in mind you will lose some distance on the cast and have a shorter figure eight. While you can find high-end rods for over $1000, a quality rod around $200 will serve you well when getting started.
- Reel: Opt for a low-profile reel with a power handle. Above all else, a comfortable fit in your hand is essential for long casting sessions.
Line and Leader
- Line: Braid is the preferred choice for musky fishing. A minimum of 100-pound test is recommended. Consider colors like moss green or white for visibility.
- Leader: Fluorocarbon or wire leaders are excellent options. The length can vary depending on the bait and whether you’re trolling. A 12-16 inch leader is generally sufficient for casting, while a 3-foot leader is recommended for trolling. Ensure the leader is at least 120-pound test.
- Snap: A snap with a double clasp is a reliable choice. This design provides a secure connection that’s less likely to get pulled open by an aggressive fish.
Remember, these are just guidelines. Experiment with different setups to find what works best for you and your fishing style. With the right gear and a bit of practice, you’ll be well on your way to landing that trophy musky.
