Jason Mitchell breaks down how he is effectively targeting fish right now in northern Minnesota.
Everyone has been talking about the late ice out, however, patterns have already caught up. Water temperatures are already starting to creep in the high 50’s and low 60’s in a lot of places. So even though there was a late spring, this warm weather have sped patterns up.
Mitchell has been fishing Red Lake this week (5/23/23) and finding a lot of fish in 6 to 8 feet of water, and targeting them with cranks. Many people underestimate trolling cranks since Minnesota is a one rod state, however, it’s a highly effective technique.
In this instance, Mitchell shares how he prefers using a spinning reel instead of a line counter, due to how quickly it takes to cast behind the boat, and how much lighter it is and easier to handle. Whenever trolling for fish in shallow water, it can actually be advantageous to choose a spinning reel over a baitcaster. Particularly because it’s lighter in hand and easier to control, making it effective at manipulating that bait.
His go-to has been the rumble shad from Northland, but any chrome shallow running bait will do.
