Ross Robertson with Bigwater Fishing shares his go-to jigging setup out on Lake Erie.
One thing walleye anglers get crazy with nowadays is braid. When jigging in bodies of water such as the Detroit River, braid is going give you a thinner diameter and a better feel. However, in many other situation, one thing that is definitely going to get you more bites is being able to switch up the line. In many situations, Ross prefers high-vis monofilament line to be able to see the bite and make minor adjustments.
One of the biggest benefits of mono is it’s stretch. Mono is going to have 20 some percent stretch in it and it’s going to present that bait totally differently. The same thing could be said when casting jigging raps. There are some days you’re going to get four or five times more bites when using mono instead of braid.
He also recommends pairing it with a fast (instead of extra fast) action rod. He is using a 6’6″ fast rod, and emphasizes the need to have that slightly slower rod to entice more bites.
In conclusion, everyone likes to swap out types of lures and colors. However, Ross emphasizes one of the best things you can do is have a second rod rigged with a different line, and if you are a braid angler, be sure to give monofilament a shot.
