Mark’s favorite view is the 3 pane split screen consisting of 2D sonar, down imaging, and side imaging. Mark relies on his side imaging and 2D sonar to cover water quickly. When dealing with structure, especially brush piles or weeds, he’ll focus on his down imaging.

The key difference between 2D sonar and down imaging is that 2D sonar uses a larger cone which covers a lot of water whereas down imaging uses a razor thin high frequency beam that provides a lot more detail from a much smaller area. 2D sonar works well out on the open water but often doesn’t read well through weeds or brush piles and bounces back a large return with a lot of noise, making it difficult to identify fish in these areas. Down imaging provides a lot more separation in those tight spaces and will allow you to see through tree limbs or weeds to pick out individual fish.
