Hello from Northern Wisconsin! What a great spring it has been! As we go into early summer, the fishing appears as though it will continue to be excellent. Post-spawn is here and spawning season for most fish is over, with the only species really left on beds being bluegills. Panfish are shallow and running all over near green weedbeds. Drifting a simple split shot rig and a crawler or fathead through these areas is a great way to fill the cooler with some nice panfish. They can also be caught on small stickbaits, crankbaits and small jig/plastics.
Walleyes are still being caught shallow, especially in low light conditions with both jigging and trolling techniques. A very good pattern has been trolling shallow running cranks behind boards around sand and gravel flats in the evenings. Walleyes will start to shift deeper in the next couple of weeks though and jigging baits like jigging raps and shiver minnows will start to take some fish as well as power corking with slip floats and drop shot fishing.
Bass fishing has been very good post-spawn and we haven’t seen any major mayfly hatches screwing things up too bad. Bottom oriented lures such as jigs, ned rigs and tubes tend to work best for post spawn smallmouth and largemouth are starting to set up in bulrushes and reed beds which are perfect conditions for flipping heavy jigs before the weeds get too thick.
