Ice conditions continue to be good on Lake Cascade. We have over 20 inches of ice in most spots and very little slush. Transportation with snowmobiles and tracked UTV’s have been fine.
The fish have started to move from the deeper, early season patterns to the shallows. Most of the fish we caught this week were in less than 15 feet of water. The bigger fish have been in small schools, less than 5 fish in a pack. They have also been aggressive when they come in and will chase your bait up 2-3 feet before they strike. Staying quiet and not making noise has also been key. The fish will spook with auger noise and other noises on the ice.
Larger profile baits have worked best for us. 1/8 oz Tingler spoons, Tikka Minnows and small shad raps all produced fish. There have been some reports of guys catching jumbos in the shallow flats (4-10 FOW) as well, but the catch rates seem to be low. its common to go an hour between big fish that come in, but the size class seems to be better. Perch 13-15 inches are common.
If you’re struggling to find big fish be sure to move until you find them. Productive spots will have bigger fish moving through every 15-20 minutes. Lake Cascade is a spot on the spot type of fishery. Meaning sometimes 10 yds can make the difference between catching a bucket full and going home empty handed. Finding the spots that have fish moving through is key.
Good luck, and we’ll see you on the water.
