Early spring walleye are often found shallow in river systems, sometimes in less than 6 feet of water. If the water is clear, these fish can be especially spooky and just getting too close with a running trolling motor can be enough to send them out of the area. NWT Pro Max Wilson consider his Power-Pole shallow water anchor to be one of the most valuable tools in his boat for several reasons, but especially for targeting walleye on shallow flats during this time of the year. By using the Power-Pole to hold the boat in place, Wilson can avoid the need for spotlock and can shut down his trolling motor to avoid spooking the fish. Now, you can accomplish the same objective with a standard anchor (though it may get a little more difficult to maintain the right orientation), but just be sure to gently set it on the bottom instead of just throwing it down. Once you’re in place, you can simply utilize forward scan on your Livescope and cast right to the fish.
