In part one of this series Wisconsin pro angler, Caleb Wistad discusses how to collect and store trout eggs to be used in spawn bags to catch trout. With the correct process eggs can be preserved throughout the year to be used in future trout fishing sessions.
Caleb gets his trout eggs from fish that he has caught and cleaned. “You’re looking for loose eggs, meaning the eggs aren’t still attached to the membrane that holds them together. You can still use the eggs that are attached, but you have to scrape them off the membrane,” Caleb explains.
Using a preservative called BorX O’Fire made by Pautzke Bait Company, Caleb sprinkles the preservative on the eggs until they have a good layer of the powder on the eggs. He then puts them in the refrigerator for 24 hours allowing the eggs to soak up the preservative and dye. After 24 hours the eggs are ready to be frozen or kept in the fridge.
In part two of this series Caleb will discuss tying spawn bags and how to rig them properly.
