As we slip into the later part of summer fishing in Minnesota things seem to be rolling along at it’s normal pace. Some of the differences have been extreme weather swings and that has affected the bite in some cases.
Walleye fishing has been some what sporadic on many lakes, but all in all folks are happy catching enough fish to eat. All across the state, walleyes are biting in isolated weed beds shallow and also deeper rock and gravel bars associated with deep water. Early and late in the day and low light conditions, seem to be best times to be chasing walleyes. As the waters begin to cool look for that bite to be better. Slip bobbers with leeches or half of a crawler have been real popular. Another good method has been pulling spinners with a minnow or half a crawler covering water at 1.25 to 1.50 mph. It’s a great method especially around weed beds. Many times there can be multiple walleyes in certain weed clumps so make sure you keep track of your routes and put a GPS icon on the exact area you contact fish. With this presentation there is always a chance of other bonus fish such as crappies, jumbo perch, northern pike, and bass. If you want action this time of year find good green cabbage beds and you will find multiple species.
Some of the lakes in the upper regions of Minnesota to try are Upper Red Lake, Big Winnie, Blackduck, Bowstring, Leech, and Woman. The Ottertail area also has many lakes that offer good walleye fishing and check with the local bait shops for information about specific lakes you want to fish.
Largemouth Bass fishing has been off the charts and with the slightly higher water has exposed habitat that are prime locations. Spinner Baits, Ned Rigs, Jig and 4-6 inch worms, swim baits, and any number of other presentations are catching bass consistently.
As the water begins to cool look for the bite to continue to get better every week. There will be a transitional period where presentations will change. Get out and enjoy some great late summer fishing. It’s better than you think.
