In this tip, Jason Mitchell shares why it’s necessary to rely on downscan (down imaging) when finding fish in deep water this time of year.
Comparing downscan with 2D sonar helps improve the ability to interpret fish. This becomes especially beneficial when fishing over deeper water (20 – 25 ft +), where rocks along the bottom tend to look a lot like fish when using 2D sonar. Downscan helps identify the difference between these rocks and fish. This is because it has a much more narrow cone, allowing for more detail in the image in comparison to the wide cone angle of the 2D sonar. This extra detail of downscan makes it easier to identify separation, therefore making it easier to identify between structure and fish, as well as multiple fish.
