Mike Teitjen shares how to improve your setup to catch more fish.
Mike emphasizes that when pursuing fish, it’s important to make sure everything is as natural as possible. One thing to pay close attention to in this regard is line twists. This is because line twists causes the jig to spin. When watching an underwater camera, you’ll notice that if your jig is spinning, the fish will swim up to it and then hightail it the other way. They have to be pretty hungry before they bite a twisting jig.
Mike shares a simple setup for eliminating this line twist. First he is using braided line as his main line. He prefers braided line for ice fishing because it provides sensitivity and it’s very strong. However, to prevent even braided line from twisting, he uses a barrel swivel. He then connects the swivel from the braid to a fluorocarbon leader. This fluorocarbon leader reduces line visibility. In addition, having the barrel swivel between the two lines eliminates the spinning of the jig almost completely. This allows your line to hang more naturally, which helps you turnover more fish.
