In shallow water, even 3-5 feet deep, a Vexilar can still be a very useful tool while ice fishing. Even though the cone angle is small, that doesn’t mean that you won’t see fish. I’ll often see a fish on the Vexilar before I can see it down the hole when I’m sight fishing. Sometimes even when I’m sight fishing, I’ll use my Vexilar so I don’t have to lean over my hole the entire time. I’ll wait until a fish shows on the screen and then lean over and fish for it.
A couple of tips for ice fishing shallow water with a Vexilar:
- Make sure that you drill your holes straight up and down. Don’t get them at an angle.
- Keep the transducer high in the hole instead of dropping it to the bottom of the ice.
- Use the low power mode to trim down the profile of your lure.
Even in shallow water, a Vexilar can still help you catch more fish.
