The ice is shaping up nicely this season. We have anywhere from 4-6” of good ice other than a few areas that waterfowl have kept open so make sure to check the ice as you go. Don’t assume it’s good because someone else was out before you.
As for fishing it’s been good. The typical early ice walleye spots have been producing fairly good in the last hour of light and into dark. 12-18feet of water on the breaks and weed edges seem to be producing most of the fish. The panfish bite has been good as long as you can stay on the fish. Some of the lakes the fish have been extremely spooky until “prime time” in the evening. That should improve as the ice gets thicker and we get a little bit of snow. Small spoon like a pinhead or a small jig and plastic have been working very well but I tent to lean more on the spoon as I can fish fast and efficiently. The panfish bite should only get better over the next couple of weeks so make sure to get out and take advantage of the good ice we are looking to get.
