Fishing over the final days of the Rainy River walleye season we found good numbers of fish throughout our week at Rainy, until the warmup when water levels rose and clarity dropped in the Birchdale area.
We caught good numbers of fish, averaging around 30-40 fish per day with size ranging from 14-27 inches. The majority of fish were found in 8-12 feet of water. A jig and small sucker minnow worked slowly was the best presentation during our stay. A jig with plastics also caught fish but not as effectively as the live bait.
Make sure to use the smallest jig you can get away with that still makes bottom contact. Tip it with a small sucker minnow and work it very slowly. This was our most effective presentation.
