Rainy Lake, MN (January 11, 2025)

Best ice we have seen in a long time. Main Basins have 12-16 inches of ice currently. Some very hazardous Ice Heaves have developed with the swinging temperatures. Proceed with caution. Most of the back channels are very consistent ice with samples taken in the 10-13 inch thickness.

Fishing has been a bit slow to start the season, marking a good amount of fish but they are definitely moody. Best presentation so far for me has been a 1/16 oz Tungsten Jig paired with a shiner and fished very subtle. Dead Sticks have also been producing with just a red octopus hook and a split shot.

Walleyes are getting caught on deep transitions in 26 to 31 feet where reefs taper off into mud.
