First ice is here, and you always need to think about safety first before heading out on the ice. I make sure to have on my Ice Armor by Clam Rise Ice Suit. It has Motion Float Technology floatation. This suit gives me a piece of mind as I am walking out on the ice. Other things I have with me are a set of ice picks, ice cleats and a spud bar for checking the ice thickness as you walk out.
We ended up fishing Northwest of Park Rapids, we walked out on 4-5 inches of ice. We found our fish in 12-14 foot of water just roaming around the lake basin. Nothing holding them in one spot they were just crushing around. My choice of tackle was the #10 Red Glow Drop Kick jig and a 1/32 oz Pinhead Pro Mino. I tipped my Drop Kick with 3 colored Euro larvae and on the Pinhead, I would put 2 Eura larvae on each hook. I would pick out multiple-colored larvae, that seems to trigger the fish to bite.
Stay safe and make sure to check your ice before heading out.
