The past weekend was a great multi-species weekend for us here in Northern Wisconsin! We had some great action in both deep, and shallow water with a mixed bag of nice bluegills, bass and pike out on 25′ basins and a very good swimbait bite for bass, pike, and even a few other bonus species mixed in on the weed edges (giant bowfin for example!)! We found fish on the deep basin flats using sonar to locate pods of bluegills. Once you found the ‘gills there seemed to be plenty of bass and pike nearby wanting in on the action. We caught these deeper fish on everything from drop shotted crawlers and plastics to vertical jigged glide baits and lipless cranks.
On the other hand, the swimbait bite was hot up shallower in the weeds. This bite is something we see every fall as the weeds start to die down, exposing schools of bluegills that had been seeking refuge there. A large paddletail swimbait slow-rolled next to the deep edge of big weed flats mimics these vulnerable prey fish very well and it’s exactly what the bass and pike have been waiting for!
