Well, we finally have ice-out here in Northern Wisconsin but the weather has still been extremely wet, cold and windy so very few fish have been caught yet. That’s all going to change this week, though, with warmer, stable weather moving in. This weather shift will coincide perfectly with the Wisconsin game fish opener on May 6 and I would expect the fishing to really be on fire by this weekend. Be sure to check out my full opening-day forecast video here on Virtual Angling to get a good feel for the upcoming weeks.
As far as opportunities up to this point and through this week go, we are limited to panfish, bass and trout until Saturday. Our streams have come down a little bit and I’ve been out doing a little catch and release trout fishing and had some luck throwing small jigs and suspending stickbaits. The trout fishing should continue to improve as the flood waters begin to drop and water temps finally start to climb. Panfish are just starting to move shallow and a few crappies have been caught over green weeds in 8-12 feet of water. Bass fishing has been tough with the weather so far and most bass are still being caught on deeper structure on finesse jigs and drop shot rigs. I expect that to change dramatically over the next couple weeks as the water temps spike in the afternoons especially. I’ll have much more to report next week as lots of anglers hit the water this weekend and we finally can get out in some decent weather! Tight lines!
