Fishing has been very good in Northern Wisconsin this month. Options are endless this time of year and the hardest part is sometimes figuring out what species to target! I’m going to cover a few “different” opportunities in this report that are all great alternative options to the typical “inland lake” scenarios.
1. Stream trout fishing. Late Summer and early fall are great times to go hit some of the smaller trout streams in the area. Just wet wade or throw on a pair of light waders and go. Bring an assortment of small jigs, spinners and spoons and cast into larger pools and retrieve through them and you can catch some great brown, brook and rainbow trout. Also try some of the stocked trout lakes in the area. A couple small crankbaits or stickbaits trolled behind a canoe or small boat can be deadly on these stocked trout.
2. Troll the Great Lakes for trout and salmon. Late summer is prime time for big king salmon on Lake Michigan and also offers some excellent lake trout/mixed bag opportunities on Lake Superior. Trolling spoons and flasher-fly combos on downriggers and Dipsey Divers can be an absolute blast and you don’t need a giant boat to do it if the weather is good, which it often is in August.
3. Fish a river. There are so many incredible shore and float fishing opportunities in Wisconsin to catch lots of species of fish from sturgeon and catfish to walleyes and smallmouth bass. Late summer is prime time to fish these rivers as low water often concentrates fish into the deepest pools and they are super active in the warmer water temps. Live bait is the #1 choice if you want to catch everything, and a nightcrawler slow drifted along the bottom is hard to beat if you want a chance at almost anything that swims. Go give one of these options a try and I guarantee you will have a blast and maybe learn a few things in the process!
