The late Summer/early Fall transition is just starting to come into play in Northern Wisconsin natural lakes. Fish are definitely scattered all over the place and electronics are your #1 tool this time of year for finding fish. Walleyes are being caught everywhere from the deep basins in open water to weed edges as shallow as 6′. Trolling the basins with stickbaits or crawler harnesses behind bottom bouncers has been producing some fish. Jigs and plastics worked aggressively for the shallower fish have been working well.
Panfish are fairly easy to locate on the deepest weeds available. Drop a larger jig and plastic or a spoon to weed out some of the smaller fish. Bass are beginning to transition back to shallower water again and can be found chasing schools of young-of-the-year baitfish near weedbeds and shallow reefs. This is a great time of year to fish swimbaits around these bait schools. Lots of great fishing opportunities lie ahead this fall and I’ll be updating you on the progression!
