Opening weekend/week reports from Mille Lacs have been described as “Fantastic” and “unbelievable”. The fish are shallow in depths 12 feet and under and hanging on rock/sand flats. Casting a jig and a minnow or jigs and plastics have been the ticket, but for a good walleye smallmouth combo, its hard to beat a jerk bait. On warmer afternoons, look for smallmouth to be sliding up in more numbers on the same flats. Jerkbaits, 4in paddle tail swimbaits, and hair jigs will get you bites during prime time.
