WALLEYE:
The young of the year perch crop is abundant this year, and it’s driving fish to feed heavily as we come into August. There are fish to be caught out deep on the mud flats and still up shallow. The shallow bite has been the best of the two, and it’s better for you and the fish. As far as shallow, look for rocks in 4-6 feet and just off the edges in 9-12 feet. You’ll find a combo of walleye and smallmouth bass here, and they can be caught using some of the same tactics. Since the water is warm and the fish are feeding, casting a crankbait like Rapala Shad Dancers and DT-6-10s have been working well, bashing off rocks at a steady clip. For fish off the edge, a jigging Rapala has also been good.
SMALLMOUTH:
During calm early morning, topwaters have been good again on shallow rocks 4-6 feet. Shallower fish can also be caught with small swimbaits and jerkbaits all day. Damiki rigging a Crush City Freeloader off the edge in 10-15ft has also been good for when they slide out a little. For more of a challenge with a big reward, head out deep, around 20 feet, and find big stand-alone boulders for some big bass with Ned rigs. The Crush City BLT has been an excellent choice for pairing with Ned head jigs.
