A recent large bug hatch on Mille Lacs does not seem to have affected the fishing, with reports of 50-60 fish days occurring. Water temps have reached the mid-60s, and Walleye are hanging in depths of 14-16ft and suspended off the bottom. They’re hungry and zooming up for a 1/8oz VMC Hard Ball jig tipped with a leech under a bobber. Set your bobber at 10-12 feet and utilize forward facing sonar or side imaging electronics to put the leech right on their heads or focus on points and breaks between 10-20 feet. These high riding walleye can also be caught casting jerkbaits with a jerk, jerk, pause cadence.
Smallmouth are still in the act of spawning on shallow flats, and a few post-spawn wolf packs have been reported. Catch those cruisers on jerkbaits and even topwater walking baits.
Musky have recently been reported way up in the shallows, indicating recovery from the spawn. Catch these fish by burning generally smaller musky baits like inline spinners or jerkbaits and focus on the inside weed line where newly emerging cabbage can be found.
