Leech Lake
Fishing on Leech Lake has been great recently. Walleye seem plentiful with many 18”-20” fish finding their way into the boat. This week we have seen a shift in walleye bait preferences. A slip bobber and a leech are still producing quite a few fish, but this week a spinner rig and a night crawler produced just as many if not more fish. Trolling crank baits is also putting fish in the boat for some people.
Location seems to be more important than presentation right now. Walleyes are relating heavily to weed lines and sand flats right now. Many of the walleyes are feeding on crayfish and small perch, so if you find weeds and baitfish you are sure to find walleyes.
The sunfish can still be found relatively shallow right now. Check green weed growth in 3-6’ of water in Steamboat and Sucker Bay for active sunfish. For the most part the crappies have moved to the deeper weed lines near their spawning areas.
