Leech Lake, MN (August 8, 2024)

Water Temp 70-72 degrees

A recent algae bloom after the heat wave has helped the fishing. The dirtier water keeps fish closer to the boat and around longer. Still, the best presentation has been reaction-style baits like Rapala Jigging Raps fished in 16-20 feet. The crayfish molt has been hanging on, as evidenced by the cleaned fish that are full of crayfish. Jigging Raps hopped along the bottom in orange or green colors are great for mimicking the color and swimming action of crayfish. Early in the morning, you can catch a few fish in 10-12 feet, but later in the day and on calm days, focus time fishing around the 20-foot mark. To find fish, drive 16-20-foot flats until you see fish on side imaging, as the fish don’t seem to be related to anything, in particular, other than depth. A few fish are being seen on deep humps in Walker Bay, but we’re way behind, so expect those fish to show up as summer turns to fall. Bite windows are key as far as when they decide to feed, so be prepared to run through schools of fish until they turn on.

Some anglers are also doing well trolling shad raps after dark as well.
