Leech Lake Report 5/23/23
Fishing on Leech Lake has been good this past week. Walleyes are starting to group up and hold tight to shallow structures, and the panfish bite has really picked up this week as well.
Walleyes are being caught using a spottail shiner and a jig in 5’-12’ of water. Weed to sand transition areas are holding plenty of keeper sized fish right now with rocky shorelines holding some of the nicer fish. Keeping your boat off the fish and pitching 1/8 ounce Kenkatch Tackle Co. 3D Eye jigs has been a key to success on calm and sunny days. This is especially true when targeting those shallow feeding walleyes.
Panfish are showing up in their typical shallow spring areas. Look for green new growth cabbage weeds to be holding crappies, sunfish, and perch. A small plastic under a float has been out producing live bait recently. Remember, these fish are beginning to spawn, so please practice selective harvest and release the largest ones if you are planning on keeping a few.
