Water temps on Winnie and surrounding lakes are in the upper 70s with a potential to hit 80 this summer if the heat keeps up.
Walleyes are starting to fire up again. There’s a lot of algae on the bottom and we’ve had a lot of heavy winds, so bobber fishing has been good. Key depths have been 17-23 feet of water. Some walleyes have been caught as shallow as 6 feet during the day.
Parrot has been a hot jig color right now as well as black. A long (~3 foot) leader has been crucial right now as most of the fish are off the bottom 2-3 feet.
Jigging has been picking up, especially with tungsten long shank jigs and Eye Candy paddle tail or minnow plastics. Double pop it and don’t move it too fast. If the fish have to work too hard, they won’t hit it right now.
Come midsummer the walleyes will start to school up again as they come out of the basin. Structure like humps near deep mud basins is a good place to look for fish. Spinners, crankbaits, and plastics work well this time of year.
