Salmon fishing is on fire up and down the west shore of Lake Michigan. We’re seeing massive fish and quick limits with the fish moving out to deeper water. A combination of dipsy divers, down riggers, and lead core have caught fish. There are loads of alewives out there, so find bait pods and start fishing. If you don’t get a bit, turn around and come through the bait from a different angle. 250 feet of water is the sweet spot, with baits running 100-120 feet down. If you don’t have down riggers, running dipsys on lead-core will get you down to the fish. When running planner boards, get them out far beyond the boat to minimize tangles and widen your spread. As far as baits are concerned, magnum moonshine spoons in anything black have been very productive when trolled behind boards and down riggers. The bite has been best in the first hour and a half of the morning. Getting out and setting lines 30-45 minutes before daybreak. The next moon phase will make for a stellar night bite with glow spoons, so look ahead!
