Lake Kabetogama (May 17th, 2022)

Water levels are at record level flooding that last we saw was during 2014. Many resort and cabin docks are under water, but there are still multiple access points that are open! Don’t let the high water discourage you because the fishing has been greatly impacted by this!

Ice off was just two days before opener and with water temps as low as 40° many large female walleyes have been in shallow in the 10ft and less range. Many great tactics at these fish have been simple 1/8oz jig and fathead or shiner minnow as-well as slip bobber fishing from boat and shore. Don’t be afraid to try throwing plastics and jigging raps as they have producing too. If you’re looking for more of an eater size fish, they have been most frequently found in depths among 25ft down to 40ft using a 1/4 oz jig and minnow as well. Look along the points of islands and outside of bays for the deeper water and these fish. With rain in the forecast, the lake will be continuing to rise so be careful boating for floating debris as well as new rock hazards that normally would be out of the water!
