We finished our ice fishing season this weekend on Fort Peck chasing Lakers.
We stayed at Lake Ridge Hotel located in Fort Peck which has a restaurant/bar just across the road. Hotel has a kitchenette so you can cook your own meals. Ask to talk with Eddy who has knowledge of the area and can point you in the right direction. We traveled using a Wilcraft which makes traveling safer and easy to haul all our equipment while staying mobile on the ice.
Using forward facing sonar really helps while searching for active fish. We could see fish coming in from 60 feet down and 70 feet away from our holes. Also being able to see how fish respond to a jigging technique helps to make changes easier. We targeted major points leading into back bays or fished underwater humps. Lakers typically travel throughout the day feeding on baitfish. Often 2-3 Lakers would show up suspended 10-15 feet off the bottom. We had 2 poles at the ready at all times. Calling them them in with a 1/2 oz or 3/4 oz PK Ridge Rattl’r and if they won’t bite throw them a 3/8 oz PK Rattle Spoon tipped with a full sucker minnow and hang on!
