Salmon:
This has been the best salmon season in a long time, with limits coming in every day. A good 4-year-old year class is making for some heavy fish, pushing 30 pounds to boot!
The water took a long time to warm, and now that it has, salmon are concentrating on the edge of the deep river channels. Troll allowed lines at 2.1-2.2mph with down riggers and long lines mixed. Run a few long lines 300 feet back off the sides with planner boards to get down to 60 feet and one long line straight off the back out 400 feet to get down to 80 feet. Experiment with downrigger depth at 40-75 feet until you get bites. Your spread should also be versatile for baits; try running a mixture of Salmon Candy flies with 8-11-inch Salmon Candy flashers and Brad’s cup plugs with 8-11-inch flashers.
Lake Trout:
Focus fishing in the depth range of 115-130 feet on deep flats between points. A 3/4 to 1-ounce jig head with 4.8in Keitech swimbait in “sight flash” worked 10-12 feet off the bottom has been the best bait. Use your 2D sonar to find fish and watch them interact with your bait. Getting them to chase up his key, so reel up to the surface quickly to get them to bite once they see your bait.
Walleye:
Walleye fishing has picked up, making up for a long lull early in the season. Trolling bottom bouncers with slow death rigs 14-16 feet off the weed edges has been most effective. Find weed edges off main lake points, as fish have now exited the creek arms.
