SALMON:
The bite is on all day long for salmon, and the Montana state record was just broken, with a good possibility of it being broken again yet this season. The fish are starting to act like they are staging closer to the marinas where they are stocked. They are currently occupying the 30-70 foot depths over deeper water. Their color is starting to get darker, indicating the beginning of the end. As they begin staging, look for more of a reaction bite using larger 11-inch flashers with blue, green, or black chrome Salmon Candy Flies. A good set-up for multiple anglers is to run two downriggers off the side, one set at 70 feet and the other at 95-100 feet. Then run two rods on planner boards off the side at 300 feet and one line straight off the back with 400 feet out. This is a good spread for covering a lot of water down there. Run a 27-28-inch leader off the back of an 11-inch flasher to make it less erratic.
LAKE TROUT:
To catch trout, find deep flats between points in 115-130 feet. Vertical jig with a 3/4 ounce jig head and a 4.8-inch Keitch Paddle tail swimbait in sight flash color. Mark them on electronics and make them chase up while you jig for some great action!
WALLEYE:
Anglers are doing well running bottom bouncers in 14-18ft with a slow death hook and half crawler. SMALL spinners like the Northland butterfly blade in bright colors or chrome have worked well running them at .8-1mph. The fish are holding in tight schools, so if you run into fish, don’t be afraid to turn around and run through them again. Look for schools on main lake points and weed edges or rock edges
