Devils Lake, ND (September 4, 2024)

Time sure does move quickly when you are having fun! We are starting to see cooler nights and noticeably shorter days. This means fall is just around the corner.

Options are what you have this time of year. Bow season opened for deer hunting last week as did dove hunting. Early canadian goose has been open for a few weeks now. Grouse season will open next weekend. Early season duck and resident duck season is right around the corner.

And there are still some great fishing options available as well!!

As for the bite.

We have had a bit of a roller coaster ride of late. Fish are transitioning and moving more this time of year than during the summer time patterns. One day we will get them shallow on flooded roads and the next day they are out deep off the old shoreline. The bite can really change quickly and it’s important to really work a lot of different depths and structures. Best presentations to use this time of year:

  1. Troll cranks out in deeper water. You get to cover a lot of water doing this and when fish are scattered a bit, this is the most efficient way to do so. Salmo hornets, flicker shads, and rapalas all work well. Color really seems to vary from day to day. Most days brighter is better!
  2. Working the bridges! Jig/minnow can be very deadly. We also like to fish more aggressively with j raps and sonars. Some days they really want more aggressive presentations. At the very least, you might be able to draw them in and get them to hit the jig/minnow or live bait presentation.
  3. The good old bottom bouncer and spinner. Again, this presentation probably catches more walleyes on Devils Lake than any other. You can fish it from 5ft to 40ft. Cover lots of water and depths and figure out what they want. A third of a crawler or piece of plastic can be deadly!
  4. Slip bobbering. Leeches are near impossible to get this time of year; however, use a minnow or third of a crawler. When you can find good concentrations of fish, slip bobbering is by far the best way to bring in numbers of fish!

Good luck to all! Enjoy this time of year! Lots of great opportunities out there for everyone to enjoy!!
