Rain, rain, and more rain. It’s a soggy start to Memorial Day weekend. With that being said it is a much-needed rain in the area. This will help green everything up and put some needed moisture back in the soil. This last week had nicer weather than forecasted. It made for a very enjoyable week of fishing.
The walleye bite continues to be a little hit or miss. The walleyes in 1-8ft of water are around but finding the right water temp and water stain in these areas remains a challenge. When everything lines up the fish are there, and they will bite. With the runoff from the rain and the wind these last few days it should only help this shallow water bite. There is another walleye bite out a little deeper in 10-20ft. This bite has been better with bobbers and leeches. It is a little earlier than when we usually see fish in these depths, but they are around.
White bass should start to pick up more and more in the coming days. They still haven’t spawned. We are finding them on wind-blown shorelines with rocks. Around the bridges seem to be holding a fair amount of them as well. Jigs and drop shots tipped with minnows, mimic minnows, and hair jigs.
The northern pike bite remains good. Casting in 1-6ft of water. 1/4-ounce jigs with paddle tail plastics will catch everything in the lake this time of year. Casting wind-blown shorelines covering water is key. Once contact is made with fish work the same area slowly back and forth until it doesn’t produce the results that you are looking for. Casting crankbaits is also starting to produce fish now that the water has warmed up a bit. Size 5s and 7s Shad raps, Flickershads, and Rippin Raps. Bottom bouncers and spinners will start to produce some fish in the coming week or two. Try in 5-15ft to start with this tactic. Half a crawler, leech or gulp are good options. We have heard of some fish being caught this way currently, but it is still a little early for it. It’s an exciting time In the Lake Region, the bite and conditions should only get better in the coming weeks.
