Devils Lake, ND (July 17, 2024)

Summer is starting to really move along…we have had a very busy summer with some great fishing.

This week the bite has stayed very solid! The good and bad thing about Devils Lake is that fish can be just about anywhere at any given time. We have caught fish casting jigs and plastics along weed edges, slip bobber on rock piles, pulling bottom bouncer and spinners on flooded roads and on the mud bottoms that is close to structure, and we have caught them trolling leadcore with smallers cranks out off of the old shoreline (20-24 ft.)

It’s important to understand what they are feeding on. This time of year you can catch them shallow or deep, on hard or soft bottoms, and you can use live bait or plastics and cranks. When we have mayfly hatches look for more fish to be out in the mud. When fish aren’t in the mud, focus on structure. Reading your electronics is huge this time of year as the fish can really move from day to day.

Seems like the entire system is fishing pretty strong right now. Cover water and find your pocket. Probably the easiest way to find fish is by pulling a bottom bouncer and spinner. A third of a crawler, leech, or a plastic will all produce fish for you.

Good luck to all!!
