Our favorite time of year to open water fish on Devils Lake is here! We love July and August. When some lakes are turning into the “dog days”, Devils Lake is running on all cylinders.
There are lots of places fish can be which means you can fish however you like. Vertical jigging, slip bobbering, pulling bottom bouncers and spinners, trolling cranks, and even casting jig/plastic combos can all be deadly! Water temps are warm, there’s a bit of algae in the water, and there is bait all over the place. This all leads to active walleyes and means you want to be here!
We have had a lot of windy and cooler days this summer. It is truly amazing that we have been able to do as well as we have considering the conditions. We have a strong class of 14-18 inch fish in the system. They are absolutely perfect for eating if you are looking to keep a few fish.

The bottom bouncer and spinner bite has been good. More fish are caught using this presentation in the summer than any other. The reason it’s so good is you can fish it shallow or deep, in rocks or mud, fast or slow, and you are always in the water and covering a lot of area in a short amount of time. Tip your spinners with a leech, third of a crawler, or a plastic and get after it! We like to use 2 ounce bottom bouncers, We use colorado blades, butterfly, and helicopter blades. It’s a good idea to have a variety of options as some days they want a certain action.
Best depths seem to be 10-20 feet. However; there are certainly fish that are shallower and deeper. Work humps, rock piles, flood roads, and timber. We have also done well fishing flooded roads (there are a lot of them out there).
