Devils Lake, ND
It is crazy to think that this is the Labor Day weekend fishing report. It doesn’t seem that long ago I was writing the Memorial Day weekend report. Devils Lake has been a bit of a rollercoaster through the month of August. Things have settled out a bit and the bite has improved over the last week. Size and number of walleyes has improved. The water temp has remained steady the last week, it is hovering around 70-73 depending on part of the lake and time of day.
The walleye, we are finding most of our fish on structure this week. Flooded roads, humps, rock piles, Brush, and the old shoreline from 1990. We have been pulling bottom bouncers and spinners tipped with a half a crawler or gulp at 1 mph. Trolling Leadcore pulling Salmo Hornets, WNC Boogie Shad, and Rapala Shad Raps. We like to troll 2mph with Leadcore. Bobbers and crawlers have also produced good numbers of walleyes when a pocket of fish is found. When bobber fishing with crawlers we like to use half a crawler hooked through the middle with a bare hook or a RLVNT 1/32nd ounce jig. There have been some walleyes being caught from shore. We have heard a few different reports of bridges producing good numbers of walleyes during sunrise and sunset. We have seen lots of young of the year White Bass in Walleye stomachs. Remember this when picking color and shape of spinner and crankbait.
Pike are around but catching numbers of them has been challenging. The best we have seen is trolling crankbaits on the old shorelines in 18-22 FOW.
White bass have become a little more common this past week. Old 281 north of Minnewaukan and the Grahams Island Road have bass along them. Trolling and casting weed beds in back bays across the lake also have white bass suspended throughout. 10-15 FOW. White bass like something that is flashy and has rattle.
The summer is starting to wind down and fall is on its way. Fall can be great fishing weather dependent. If anyone is looking for a fishing or hunting guide this fall, Bry’s Guide Service has both! You can call (701) 941-9036 or look online for more information.
