Things are beginning to change on Devils Lake. Walleyes should be looked at around current areas, as these fish will start to stage for the spawn around the lake even if the temps and ice don’t reflect it. April can have some great all day walleye action. 1/8th and ¼ ounce spoons along with rattle baits during the low light periods can produce great action this time of year. Rattle baits like the PK Rattl’r, Rapala Rippin Rap, and Northland Rippin Shad can call in aggressive walleyes. Jigging 3-5ft off the bottom can draw fish in from larger distances. This technique can be effective with the perch and walleyes.
Stay mobile and aggressive, if it’s warm enough to not set up a shack and fish a spot for 10-15 minutes and move on do so. Keep an eye on changing conditions. The ice may go off fast this year.
