Detroit Lakes, MN (June 24, 2024)

Water temps have reached 70 degrees, and a lot of the best fishing is taking place in weeds on lakes like Pelican. Some mid-lake structures are loading up with walleye on Big Cormorant. Jig and crawler/leech fishing has been good with the shiner run now done. Find weedlines and fish the outside edge or pockets. Sneaky schools pile up on weed line irregularities, so use mapping or side imaging to find the inside corners and pockets.

Good fishing exists for bluegills on beds in the DL area, but it’s crucial to practice catch-and-release with bluegills over 9 inches. This conservation effort ensures the sustainability of our fishing resources. Use side imaging to find deep bluegill beds for less pressured and less spooky gills. Slowly troll a jig and plastic or hover over beds below the boat with a small plastic, leech, or crawler on a small jig.

Don’t overlook the area’s many smaller lakes. They lack the fishing pressure and have been kicking out good fish of all species.
