Central MN (August 3rd, 2022)

Fishing has been very good the past week on the bass front. It has been more junk fishing than anything, but the key baits I have been using with success have been flipping creature baits and jigs in milfoil and around coontail patches. A Neko rig and drop shot have been very successful on the deeper weed lines.

Baits that have been a must for me have been 4” Strike King Rage bugs, Rage craws on a green pumpkin jig, 4 to 6” stick baits for Neko rigging and 3.8” swim baits on a drop shot. I’m very simple on color which for me is green pumpkin and black and blue.

In shallow water, you will want to be looking for depths of 2′ out to 10′ on the dirty lakes and for cleaner lakes fish have been found on the weed edge or deep coontail patches from 14 all the way to 25′. If you go shallow, your best bet for a bite is finding cover like trees, docks, lily pads or even the edge of the slop. For deeper water, points or slow tapering edges connected to a sharp break have been the ticket.

Make sure to stay cool this week, drink plenty of water and catch a bunch of fish!
