Big Cormorant Lake, MN (July 17, 2024)

Water temp 80 degrees

WALLEYE:

With last week’s quick warm-up and barrage of storms, walleye have been in a bit of a funk. Schools seem to be broken up, and it’s more of a one-fish-here, two-fish-there kind of deal.

To start, cover water with a spinner and crawler on 20-30-foot break lines until you find fish. After multiple passes with bites in the same spot, anchor up and cast a bobber and crawler. Try setting your bobber a few feet off the bottom, with around 18 feet being universal for this depth.

Night trolling crankbaits on shallow breaks has also been effective.

SMALLMOUTH:

Bass have shifted out to the deeper summer haunts and breaks, occupying the same waters as walleye. Any area with mixed rock in 20-30 feet has been a gold mine. Catch these fish with small Ned rigs and crawfish plastics or drop-shooting small 3-in minnow-type plastics. Many smallmouth are being caught incidentally with a bobber and leech as well.
