On area lakes like Cass and Bemidji, be sure to play the wind and get on the wind-blown side of big, weedy flats. These fish can be caught shallow in 4-8 feet or off the weed edge in 10-18 feet. Bobbers have been working well tipped with a crawler on calm sunny days and leeches on blustery days with cloud cover. The fish seem to want it moving, so give the bobber some light jigging as you slowly move it back towards the boat. Casting a 5/8-ounce Northland Puppet Minnow works well when you find more fish outside the weeds or over a cleaner sand bottom.
Walleyes will reload on a spot as they slide up and down from deep water, so if you find fish, stick around and milk a spot for all its worth.
